Learning runes and ancestral knowledge
What are runes?
Runes are the letters of the early Germanic writing systems, used from roughly the 2nd century onward across Scandinavia and northern Europe. Each rune stands for a sound and also carries a name, such as fehu (cattle, wealth) or raidho (ride, journey), that links it to the world of the people who used it.
What is the Elder Futhark?
The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet, made up of 24 runes arranged in three groups of eight called aettir. It takes its name from its first six runes: f, u, th, a, r and k. It was used from about the 2nd to the 8th century, before the shorter Younger Futhark replaced it.
Do I need any experience to start learning runes?
No. Runes 101 starts from the beginning. You meet one rune per lesson, with a reading, a practical assignment, a short quiz, a guided meditation and book references for further study.
Is Runes Academy about history or esoteric practice?
Both, and we keep the two clearly separate. We teach the runes first as a historical writing system and cultural inheritance, grounded in inscriptions and sources such as the Poetic Edda. Reflective and meditative practice sits alongside that foundation and is presented as contemporary practice.
How do the online courses work?
Each lesson has five parts: a reading, an assignment, a self-check quiz, a meditation, and book references. Your progress is saved to your student account, so you can pick up where you left off on any device.
Can I study ancestral knowledge and Nordic folklore here too?
Yes. Alongside the runes, the academy covers Nordic folklore and animism, the worlds of Norse myth, and ethnobotany and herbology. We approach ancestral material with humility, rigor and respect.
